First impressions can make or break your home sale.  If you are getting ready to list your home there are several steps you should take to make both the interior and exterior of your home inviting to buyers. Most of these are DIY and projects that are not too time consuming or expensive. However, if you need professional help, The Sellin With Elin Green Team can make recommendations. Remember, we are your Real Estate concierges and can help you navigate the waters.

Exterior

  • Trim trees away from the roof and home.
  • Trim shrubs, vegetation and remove unsightly plants.
  • Over seed lawns to maintain a “paradise” look.
  • Power wash sidewalks, driveways, patios and exterior walls.
  • Have driveway re-sealed or repaved if needed.
  • Clean front door and frame.
  • Paint front door and trim as needed to improve curb appeal.
  • Have roofing contractor inspect roof and make needed repairs.
  • Remove screens and clean windows.
  • Clean out gutters.
  • Have irrigation and lighting systems in working order.
  • Keep garbage container in the rear of the house or in the garage.
  • Keep toys and bicycles out of sight.
  • Dress up the front of the house…a few seasonal potted plants make the house look loved.

Interior

  • Declutter the home:
  • Have a yard sale to make extra cash.
  • Donate, recycle or throw away unused items.
  • Put possessions in storage.
  • Clear everything off of the kitchen counters.
  • Clean out and organize the garage.
  • Clean out and organize the closets (if your closets are overflowing, buyers will think your house is too small.)
  • De-personalize the home; pack up personal photographs, family heirlooms, religious items, etc. that may deter a buyer from seeing themselves living in the home.
  • Place all breakables, antiques and other valuables in a safe place to prevent accidental damage.
  • Add additional lighting to make rooms feel bigger and more welcoming and make sure ALL lightbulbs work.
  • Highlight the key features of the home by making sure they are not obscured by plants and furnishings.
  • Patch and paint walls and ceilings where needed.
  • Are your paint colors outdated or too personized? Ask us for the most popular and on trend colors. And if you have wallpaper, REMOVE.
  • How does the house smell? If the house has unpleasant odors, it may take longer to sell.
  • Have the home professionally cleaned.
  • Replace floor coverings as needed.

Complete this checklist and you’ll be well on your way to selling your home quickly and for top dollar!
